Adobe Illustrator Tutorial: Create a Vector Folder Icon
Check out this nice little tutorial on creating a fully vector, shiny, folder icon using Adobe Illustrator CS4. This tutorial is compatible with older versions of Adobe Illustrator as well. We will talk about using gradients and subtle shadows to create the illusion of depth in an illustration as well as masking different effects to get both a neat little text effect and a shiny surface on our folder. Sit back and enjoy or follow along for a complete learning experience! Follow me on Twitter! www.twitter.com Be sure to check out www.tutvid.com Check out the blog @ http
Check this video out at Hi-Res here: www.tutvid.com We are using Illustrator CS3, although CS2 should work fine as well with this video, to create some metal text that is fully vector. We will apply various strokes, expand strokes, work with effects, groups, and gradients and more! Please check out www.tutvid.com for more great tutorials!

B.T.W. NICE NICE NICE!:)
First of all, a big thank you for these tutorials. Something I can’t get right…When I delete the mask after releasing the opacity mask and after I delete the drop shadow in the Appearance window, I still have a drop shadow on the sides and bottom of the image. It looks like those are supposed to be gone after doing those steps but I can’t seem to get rid of it on mine.
No complaints about the instructions (other than misleadingly calling this fully vector art when it uses multiple raster effects). Your tutorials are among the best to be found. But I just gotta say: have you never seen a file folder?
@tutvid How do you convert it to an ICO??
please can you post a vid for that??

thanks man, great tut though
thank you man.. i give you mi sister…. thank you

Nate, are you planning on buying the new version of adobe products (CS5)?
i know this sounds stupid, but how do you use these after you make them ?
lol “check out this nice little”…. its 20 minutes long XD i enjoyed every minute of it
really thank you
Nice!!
well when you teach, i find, its best to do the lesson first and take notes on yourself, then tell the person when you show them the second time.
So that program is were adobe, apple ect; make their icons?
Amazing tutorial, and usual very well explained!
You are very good explaining everystep. I use illustrator since the 88 version, but I wouldn’t be able to explain every step I do or what keys I press, I just do it without looking and if somebody asks me how do I do it I am unable to answer and they may think I don’t want to help them and that I am rude. You are so lucky to have that much control!
thanks a lot man, that was really helpful.
looking forward to more of your tutorials
Keep up the excellent work uve done till now, nice tutorials!
@tutvid
O yea, cool, thank you. (FlegDesigns as well)
Good vid Nathaniel.
@tutvid Ahh.. it all makes sense now!
Being a web developer entering the world of design, your tutorials has truly been a great help! No where online have i been able to find similar tutorials with the high level of quality and so easy to understand so on behalf of others in the same position as me, THANK YOU!
I would really love to see you make a tutorial about making logos in Illustrator. perhaps where you copy the perp work (diagonal strips measurements etc. of – bit. ly /6SYdIy)
@kickit246 Sure you could if you like! You would need to convert to an ICO however.
N.
@911bun i used PS for years i just downloaded illustrator i cant understand any thing
Sexy Asian women busizz4me.info
hey haha nice tutorial small voice not like ur previus tutorial good lol
@haseebhaider2050 photoshop is raster based (pixels) and illustrator is vector based (calculations done by math). photoshop graphics are larger because information for each pixel has to be stored. generally speaking, you don’t want to enlarge raster based files more than 20%. vector files are smaller because they don’t store pixel information, rather mathematical information and can be infinitely enlarged without loss in quality.
wot is diffrence betwwen photosop and illustor?
Great tut. Thanks.
How much do these adobe illustrator softwares cost? Is it true that they cost hundreds of dollars?
hello there! i’m new at adobe illustrator. hope you don’t mind if i ask you some basic questions.
i can’t quite follow you in 3:35 when you were adding the gradient to the font, cause when i click my swatches on the upper right screen, there’s no gradient icon like what i see in your video. i’m lost. help please. thanks so much!
you sound a lot like my computers teacher, mr. poveromo o_o
very nice tutorial. thanks
2 and a half minutes LoL ! to make my GB Team one
smooooooooooooooth , were u a cow in ur past llfe?
I love to work in Illustrator, but Corel Draw seems to be much easier when it comes to text effects!
@ajiclesproductions it’s easier and better to do in CS4 than CS3 because the gradient options are way better in cs4
Can u please do a tutorial about how u did the twitter bird on the ” follow tutvid @ twitter” banner ?
I cant get the “expand” part. I can only expand appearance
i like the way you speech!, its NOT boring to listen to
I’ve realized lol
how to fill the pic?
this is the hardest adobe programe ive ever used, is waaaaay harder than flash after effects or dreamweaver….
copy paste in front, lock that up, hide it, now copy paste in front, unlock the second layer, and lock and hide the fourth layer. Now, double click the mask and copy paste in front the eleventy layer. Oh and unhide it and apply gradient stroke…
Not the easiest tutorial to follow. Love all your other ones though
This is harder to do in Cs4 then Cs3
Ive used photoshop for years, after trying out illustrator i’d never go back to ps for anything to do with the web unless it’s some end tweaking, it rocks!
do you have a tutorial on this for Photoshop?
Xt
FYI: You can in fact apply a gradient to a text layer. Just click add new fill in the appearance panel. You can add as many as you want and stack them up as you wish.
I can see that you are an expert at your field! I am launching a internet site soon, and your information will be incredibly fascinating for me.. Thanks for all your assist and wishing you all the success.
